The Bad Thing About Anxiety

All feelings have a function, and feelings prepare us for action. We've discussed previously The Good Thing About Anxiety.

But there is also a bad thing about anxiety.

Remember the fight-or-flight response?

The fight-or-flight response is a super-helpful response if, say, a bear barreled into your office.

However, humans are also built in such a way that we can respond to an internalized stimulus which represents threat to us.

This could be a thought about the past, a speculation about the future, an appraisal of ourselves, or an assumption about others.

This is not always helpful.

In this way, anxiety takes us away from the present and the things that we value.

This is how anxiety becomes impairing.

If you feel like anxiety has become impairing for you, please call (330) 492-8383 to learn about how to set your first appointment with Dr. Weaver to address your concerns and to help you get back on track. You can learn more about services offered here.
