When Do Kids Need Counseling?

When your child needs to see a pediatrician, the signs are typically quite clear (i.e., a fever, or a cough that won't go away).

When your child needs to see a psychologist, the signs may be more difficult to discern.

This is, in part, because children experience and express stress differently than adults based on their developmental level.

When monitoring your child's stress, ask yourself these three questions:

  • 1) Does my child's behavior or mood seem to be unchanging?,

  • 2) Does my child's behavior or mood seem to be extreme?, and

  • 3) Does my child's behavior or mood causing problems for them inside or outside the home?

If the answer to any of these questions is "Yes," it may be helpful to reach out to a mental health specialist for extra support.
